HELENA — Montana has joined 18 other states in an amicus brief supporting the constitutionality of North Carolina’s 20-week ban on abortions except in a medical emergency.

A brief was filed Tuesday with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, according to a news release on Attorney General Tim Fox’s website. The appeal to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was filed in late June.

The brief defends the right of states to prohibit abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which the news release said is a crucial argument to protect the lives of unborn children and safeguard similar laws across the nation.
